Training for a bachelor’s degree in Australia takes three (ordinary degree) or four (honorary degree) years. Some areas, like medicine, dentistry or engineering demand longer – 4 to 6 years – period of study.

Recently, “double degree” becomes more and more popular, for example, in business and law, information technology and management. These programs usually last longer – for 5 to 6 years. Master’s degree can be obtained in 1-2 years. Ph.D. – the highest academic qualification – is awarded after a deep study of theoretical courses and performance of research work. All together, including research, takes three years.

Many Australian universities (especially “new”, which received their status quite recently) significantly differ from the common European “classical” model. Some of them have the right to award only a bachelor’s degree and possess a small number of departments, which train specialists in only most relevant areas – business, accounting, information technology, law and engineering. Most universities have several campuses. The overall number of student campuses around Australia is over 150.

One of the characteristic features of Australian higher education system is a well-developed sector of distance education: 10 out of every 100 Australian students acquire knowledge without leaving home. Queensland University was the first to graduate students that completed the course remotely in 1911 and now this type of program is offered by more than 30 universities, including the most prestigious ones.

Foreign students can make use of Foundation Studies. On average they last for 24 weeks of training (although there are shorter versions of the so-called Fast-Track) and combine intensive training in English with the study of several majors. Successful completion of Foundation Studies guarantees entry for the first year.

Admission to the Foundation Studies is carried out twice a year – at the beginning and in the middle of the year. In order to join you must have a high school diploma and a good knowledge of English (at 5.5 points of IELTS and 500 points of the TOEFL).

The majority of Australian universities is financed by government. Australia spends more than $55 billion, accounting for 4.6% of GDP. Such investments allow providing the high quality of education, making students promising employees in any country. List of qualifications includes more than 2,000 titles. Choice of directions for future professional growth is very broad and includes both the most popular (business, engineering) specializations, as well as rare ones, like oceanography, or tropical medicine.

Among the variety of Australian universities, one can choose the future alma mater based not only on the alleged cost of training and specialization, but also taking into account the geographical location of the campus. Some of them are based in the state capitals, while the others in the quiet suburbs. Some located their housing in tropical latitudes (Charles Darwin University in Darwin), while others in temperate climates (University of Tasmania in Hobart).

The oldest universities in Australia are united in an informal group of Sandstone Universities (because of the material, with which the first campuses were built). The main features of the Sandstone Universities are prestige, focus on research and a strong bias for more theoretical rather than practical knowledge. According to statistics, students who prefer to enter Sandstone Universities are the children of wealthy families. Graduates tend to get higher salaries and influential positions. The group of Sandstone Universities consists of University of Sidney, University of Melbourne, University of Adelaida, University of Tasmania, University of Queensland and University of Western Australia.

In 1999 the leading Australian universities merged into the “Group of Eight”. Members of the association are the most respected and high-flying higher educational institutions, which guarantee getting a high social status in the future. Go8 includes Australian National University, University of Queensland, University of Sydney, University of Western Australia, University of New South Wales, University of Melbourne, University of Adelaide and Monash University.
